  27. This document describes Progressive Networks' RealAudio Player.
  28. Our web site is http://www.realaudio.com please check it for the latest
  29. information.  Please see http://www.realaudio.com/help.html for help and
  30. more information.  The software and documentation is provided to you in
  31. accordance with your license agreement.

  33. The RealAudio Player provides real time sound over the Internet.
  34. Once you have installed the RealAudio Player, RealAudio will play
  35. automatically when you select any RealAudio clip on a World Wide Web page.
  36. You do not need to load the RealAudio player first.  The
  37. RealAudio Player only plays RealAudio files.  It does not play .au
  38. or .wav files.
  39.  
  40. To use your RealAudio Player, connect to a World Wide Web site
  41. that has RealAudio. Click on a link and the RealAudio player will open and
  42. start to play. The Player first contacts the host
  43. computer that contains the audio.  It then briefly buffers some audio. If
  44. you are curious about the audio packets comming into your computer, please
  45. pull down the "View" menu and select "Statistics."

  49. Quick Start
  50.  
  51. Follow these steps to install the RealAudio Player for Windows:
  52.  
  53.   1. Download the file RAWIN100.EXE. You can do this by going to
  54.      our home page http://www.realaudio.com and following the
  55.      download links.
  56.      
  57.      If your web browser asks "How would you like to handle this
  58.      file" choose "Save to Disk.". If you web browser displays
  59.      the text of the file instead of downloading it, configure
  60.      it to save the MIME type "application-octet-stream".
  61.      You can find instructions for configuring your web browser
  62.      on our site.  Start at http://www.realaudio.com/help.html
  63.      and choose FAQ.  From the FAQ, choose the "Downloading the
  64.      RealAudio Player" entry.

  66.   2. Run RAWIN100.EXE.
  67.         o From the Program Manager choose File - Run, and Browse
  68.           to find where you had your Web Browser save RAWIN100.EXE
  69.      OR o You can use the file manager and double-click
  70.           on RAWIN100.EXE.
  71.      OR o If you have Windows 95 you can choose
  72.           Start - Run, and Browse to find the directory where you
  73.           had your Web Browser save RAWIN100.EXE
  74.  
  75.   3. Follow the instructions. Use "Express" setup unless you want
  76.      to control where and how the player is installed.  At the
  77.      conclusion of the setup program, the RealAudio player will
  78.      launch and play a Welcome to RealAudio message.  If this
  79.      message sounds distorted, please see the "Sound" section
  80.      of these Release Notes.

  84. System Requirements
  85.  
  86. Your system needs to have the following in order to
  87. run the RealAudio Player:
  88.  
  89.    * 486/33 SX or better PC running Microsoft Windows 3.1x,
  90.      Windows NT or Windows 95
  91.  
  92.    * 8 megabytes RAM.
  93.  
  94.    * 2 megabytes free disk space.
  95.  
  96.    * A sound card with a Windows Sound driver.
  97.      (The RealAudio Player is not compatible with the
  98.      PC Speaker program or other software programs which
  99.      emulations a sound card.)
  100.  
  101.    * An Internet Connection. Either a direct connection
  102.      or a 14.4K Baud or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  103.      connection to an Internet Service Provider
  104.

  107. Software Requirements
  108.  
  109. In order to install the RealAudio Player, you will need
  110.  
  111.    * Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows NT or Windows 95
  112.  
  113.    * Standard Sound Drivers for your sound card
  114.  
  115.    * A TCP/IP Protocol Stack (Winsock or equivalent)
  116.  
  117. In addition, to get the most benefit from the RealAudio Player, we
  118. recommend that you have a World Wide Web browser installed.
  119.

  122. Supported Web Browsers
  123.  
  124. The following World Wide Web Browsers are currently supported:
  125.  
  126.    * AIR Mosaic (Internet In a Box)
  127.    * Booklink InternetWorks (also known as GNNWorks)
  128.    * Cello WWW Browser
  129.    * CompuServe connection using AIR Mosaic
  130.    * EINet WinWeb
  131.    * InternetMCI Navigator
  132.    * Microsoft Internet Explorer
  133.    * NCSA Mosaic
  134.    * Netscape Navigator
  135.    * Quarterdeck Mosaic
  136.    * Spyglass Mosaic and Enhanced Mosaic

  139. If you have a NetCom (version 1.60 or later) account or
  140. an America OnLine(version 2.5 or later) account, you will
  141. need to use a different Web Browser than the Web browsers
  142. supplied with your account. We have tested both of these
  143. connections with Netscape Navigator available from
  144. http://home.netscape.com or ftp://ftp.netscape.com.
  145.  
  146. To use a third party browser, first establish your network connection
  147. by dialing into NetCom or Ameria Online and logging in.
  148. Once you are connected, minimize the NetCom or America Online
  149. window and start Netscape Navigator.  For example, if you were
  150. using NetCom, you would login to NetCom first. Once your connection
  151. has been established, minimize the NetCom window and start Netscape. When
  152. you are done, quit Netscape then quit NetCom.  Be sure to run
  153. the RealAudio Installer (RAWIN100.EXE) after you install Netscape
  154. on your system.  Otherwise, you will have to manually configure
  155. Netscape.  
  156.  
  157. If you are using IBM's OS/2 Web Explorer then please see our on-line
  158. Configuration Instructions. Go to http://www.realaudio.com/help.html
  159. and choose "FAQ".  In the FAQ, choose OS/2 Web Explorer.  The 
  160. RealAudio Installer does not automatically configure Web Explorer: 
  161. you will need to manually install the RealAudio player by following
  162. the instructions on our site.

  166.    * Lynx
  167.  
  168.    * Chameleon Web Browser (Note that you can use the 
  169.      Chameleon Stack with an alternate browser.)

  171.    * Prodigy dial up Connections

  173.    * Pipeline browser

  177. Accessing RealAudio through Firewalls
  178.  
  179. RealAudio uses port 7070 for TCP and ports 6970 through 7170
  180. inclusive for UDP transmission. If you are accessing RealAudio
  181. through a firewall, your firewall administrator will need to
  182. authorize these ports. You can point your administrator to our
  183. firewall page, http://www.realaudio.com/firewall.html for details.

  197. Sound
  198.  
  199. Audio is transmitted to the RealAudio player in the RealAudio
  200. format. The transfer rate for RealAudio is approximately
  201. 1 Kilobyte/second. The player then by default produces 16 bit
  202. 8 Kilohertz sound. If you hear garbled audio then you can change
  203. the kind of sound the RealAudio player produces.  To change the
  204. kind of sound produced, please pull down the "View" menu and
  205. choose "Options". Select "Advanced" and you will see toggle boxes
  206. for "use 8 bit" and "use 11 Khz":
  207.  
  208.    * 16 bit  8 Kilohertz (default)
  209.    *  8 bit  8 Kilohertz (select use 8 bit)
  210.    * 16 bit 11 Kilohertz (select use 11 Khz)
  211.    *  8 bit 11 Kilohertz (select use 8 bit and use 11 Khz)
  212.  
  213. If you are not receiving AM quality audio, please see our 
  214. FAQ entry on audio quality by going to 
  215. http://www.realaudio.com/help.html and choose FAQ.  From there,
  216. select the "Audio Quality" entry.

  220. The Internet Adapter (TIA)
  221.  
  222. The RealAudio Player does not currently work with TIA.
  223. TIA does not transmit UDP packets to client connections.
  224. If you connect using TIA you will receive everything
  225. but the audio. A TIA version that supports UDP is expected later
  226. this year.
  227.

  230. Known Problems
  231.  
  232.    * Having large applications open may prevent the RealAudio
  233.      installer from executing.  If this happens, please close
  234.      all other applications and then install.
  235.  
  236.    * Starting or quitting large applications while playing
  237.      RealAudio can cause some brief disruption of the playback.
  238.  
  239.    * Playback on some 486/25 SX computers does not work properly.
  240.  
  241.    * The RealAudio Player is not compatible with Netscape Navigator
  242.      1.1 Alpha Release. There are no known compatibility problems
  243.      with the Netscape Navigator 1.0, 1.1 or later releases. If you
  244.      are experiencing problems with using RealAudio Player
  245.      with the 1.1 Alpha version of Netscape, please upgrade to the 
  246.      1.1n release version.

  259. Browser Upgrade
  260.  
  261. After you upgrade your browser, you may lose the configuration 
  262. information for the RealAudio player. The easiest way to 
  263. re-configure your browser is to re-install the player.
  264. Alternatively, you can manually configure your browser:

  266.    * Viewer name: c:\RAPLAYER\RAPLAYER.EXE
  267.    * Mime Type: audio
  268.    * Mime Subtype: x-pn-realaudio

  274. Audible Defects
  275.  
  276. There are occasional audible defects that are evident when
  277. playing audio clips. To help our continuous quality improvement
  278. plans, we would appreciate it if you could submit a problem
  279. report telling us which clip and where in the clip the defect is.

  283. Manually Configuring the RealAudio Player
  284.  
  285. In the event that RealAudio Setup was unable to find a Web Browser,
  286. the following steps will allow you to use the RealAudio Player.
  287. Please be sure to send us a problem report if you have to manually
  288. configure the RealAudio Player for a supported Web Browser.
  289.  
  290. Configuring RealAudio for the Netscape Navigator
  291.  
  292. To install the RealAudio Player as a helper application (also called
  293. a viewer):
  294.  
  295.   1. Start the Netscape Navigator and from the Options Menu select
  296.      the Preferences menu item.
  297.  
  298.   2. On the preferences dialog, select the entry 
  299.      "Helper Applications" in the combo-box (pull-down list box).
  300.  
  301.   3. Press the New button and enter "audio" in the Mime Type
  302.      field and "x-pn-realaudio" in the Mime subtype field.
  303.  
  304.   4. Enter "ra,ram" in the extensions field.
  305.  
  306.   5. Press the "Launch Application" radio button and find
  307.      the directory in which the RealAudio Player was installed
  308.      (default is c:\RAPLAYER) and
  309.      select RAPLAYER.EXE as the application to launch.
  310.  
  311. To use the RealAudio Web site, enter "http://www.realaudio.com/"
  312. in the Location field on the main Netscape Navigator Window and
  313. press enter. You can save this entry as a BookMark by going to the
  314. Bookmarks Menu and selecting the "Add Bookmark" item.
